Director Santosh Sivan’s tender fable about childhood innocence amid the realities of war is set against the rugged landscape of Kashmir, so long a flashpoint for the territorial claims of neighboring India and Pakistan. The title character, an eight-year-old mountain boy, often hears distant gunfire. But it is not until he goes on a quest to reclaim his beloved donkey, which has been confiscated as payment of his poor family’s debts, that he is drawn toward a violence he has no capacity to understand.

Simply told and beautifully photographed among snow-capped peaks and frozen lakes, Tahaan follows the boy as he passes through military checkpoints, tries to bargain with merchants, and receives kindnesses from strangers, all while seeking to get his pet out of repossession. Portrayed by newcomer Purav Bhandare, the tiny child wearing the green wool cap becomes a commanding presence in the film – not least because we learn early on that his father has been missing in action for more than three years, and he now sees himself as the man of the family. His grandfather has died; his mother is mute.
When an elder tells him, “Without a purpose, there is no meaning to life,” Tahaan is bewildered. “What is my purpose?” he asks. Ominously, a possible answer emerges when a Kashmiri rebel enlists the unknowing child to toss a hand grenade into an army camp. As the dramatic tension increases, we hope against hope that mercy and miracle will intervene. This is, after all, a boy who has called out to his donkey, “Soon the sun will say goodbye and the moon will say hello,” and our hearts are wholly with him.

"Tahaan" - India
Director: Santosh Sivan

Eight-year-old Tahaan will do anything to get his best friend Birbal back. When Tahaan’s grandfather dies, much of the family’s assets are seized, including their pet donkey Birbal. Tahaan embarks on a treacherous journey to regain his beloved friend, one that takes him over the same mountains where his father disappeared three years earlier. Tahaan’s courage is tested as he interacts with eccentric local personalities and is naively pulled into a terrorist plot to sneak a grenade across a military checkpoint. Against the backdrop of the soulful Kashmir Valley, director Santosh Sivan (The Terrorist) explores the topic of terrorism with an open mind. Sivan focuses on Tahaan’s unfaltering love for his pet donkey and portrays the bravery and innate goodness of a young, innocent boy. Through Tahaan, Sivan captures loyalty and strength, demonstrating that even when in the company of terrorists, the goodness of a young boy can endure.

Santosh Sivan's Tahaan wins highest award at Stuttgart Film Festival
24 July 2009 3:09 AM, PDT | BollywoodHungama
Germany's only annual festival celebrating Bollywood cinema in Stuttgart concluded on July 19. And the highest honour went to Santosh Sivan's Hindi film Tahaan. But the cinematographer-filmmaker shooting for Mani Ratnam's Raavan in distant inaccessible Chalakudy in Kerala didn't know about the triumph until three days after it happened! Yes, the winner of the top award 'The German Star Of India' award at Stuttgart Film Festival was Santosh Sivan's film Tahaan about the adventures of a little boy and his pet donkey in militant Kashmir. Kunal Kohli who was the only Indian jury member at the awards said, "There were other top contenders like Neeraj Pandey's A Wednesday, Piyush Jha's Sikandar, Nishikant Kamat's Mumbai Meri Jaan, Umkanth Thumrugoti's 7 Days In Slow Motion , and Gabricha Paus' The Damned Rain. All the jury members loved the innocence of Tahaan. It reminded them of Robert Benigni's Life Is Beautiful. -- Subhash K. Jha
