ALOHA BORICUA will be playing for three nights only – June 10, 11 & 12 – at Su Teatro’s Denver Civic Theater, 721 Santa Fe Drive, Denver 80204.  The play is of interest to us not only because of its indigenous themes, but on a very personal level as it mirrors the story of Merv’s great grandmother (on his mother’s side), who sailed from Puerto Rico to Hawai’i with her parents at age 13.  A story not often told, it promises to be an exceptional evening of entertainment.  Hope to see you there. - Jeanne Rubin & Merv Tano

ALOHA BORICUA

“…a modern, hip and funky show where Rent meets plena, rock, soul and Hawaiian rhythms”

Teatro Pregones Artistic Director Jorge Merced on Aloha Boricua!

Estimados Amigos,

It is our pleasure to invite you to attend a special presentation of Teatro Pregones in Aloha Boricua! One of the masterworks of American theater that provides a fire-cracking exclamation point to our Cornerstones of Culture season. Three nights only: June 10, 11 and 12 at The Denver Civic Theater, 721 Santa Fe Dr. at 7:30 p.m. Funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Performance Network made it possible for us to bring you this exciting Latino musical play.

Neruda Poetry Festival alum Sandra Maria Esteves says:

"I was reminded of the Broadway production of Hair combined with the rogue and bold style of Bertolt Brecht a la Cabaret. Only this is a Boricua production full of island culture, nuance and flavor, from bomba and plena, bacalao and avena, to alcapurrias, coquí and, of course, revolution."

The rhythms of traditional Puerto Rican music and urban reggaetón collide in this song-driven rendition of the historic migration of Puerto Ricans to Hawaii. Adapted from Vivir del cuento, by legendary writer and gay icon Manuel Ramos Otero, the production weaves the voices of multiple generations, including the sugar cane workers who first embarked on a transoceanic trip in 1900 to Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani to today’s street-wise poets, and makes sense of it all in 2010.

This play is a thrilling, mesmerizing, life affirming capstone to the traditional theatrical season and an uninhibited, loud and luscious harbinger of summer. Don’t miss out.
