A special Jackson/Ho China Forum of Chinese art and photography, brought to Denver by a Shanghai Oriental Rostrum delegation:

The exhibit will consist of the famous Jinshan farmer paintings collected by the Shanghai Municipal government, as well as a collection of photographs reflecting old and new Shanghai. The paintings and photographs will be on display in DU’s Driscoll Center from 10am - 4:30pm on July 21 and 22. The Shanghai delegation will make a presentation of the artwork and the ongoing Shanghai World Expo in room 150 of Cherrington Hall at 5:00 pm, July 21. old town street

8th Annual International Symposium, China on the World Stage: The Struggle of a Rising Power

This one-day conference will explore the historic, domestic and external sources of China’s struggle as a rising world power, as well as its relations with other major powers, third world countries and its Asian Pacific neighbors.

Zan croppedOur guest, Luca Zan, will discuss “The Management of Cultural Heritage in China.” Luca Zan is Dr. Luca Zan is Professor of Economics and the Director of the Program in the Management and Innovation of Cultural and Artistic Organizations at the University of Bologna, Italy. He has published extensively in international journals on strategic management and change, management and accounting history, and the management of museums and cultural organizations. He will discuss his research, carried out from 2005 – 2008, which analyzed the change processes regarding managerial aspects in the process of archeological discoveries, restoration, museum definition and access to cultural heritage in Luoyang City, China.

I will conduct a “Conversation on China’s Culture” with Professor Wang Gungwu. Professor Wang is the Chairman of the East Asian Institute and University Professor, National University of Singapore. He is also Emeritus Professor of the Australian National University, a Commander of the British Empire (CBE); Fellow, and former President, of the Australian Academy of the Humanities; Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Science; Member of Academia Sinica; Honorary Member of the Chinese Academy of Social Science. He was conferred the International Academic Prize, Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prizes. In Singapore, he is Chairman of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies; Chairman of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at NUS; Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Heritage Centre; Board Member of the Institute of Strategic and Defence Studies at NTU. His books include: The Chinese Overseas: From Earthbound China to the Quest for Autonomy; Don't Leave Home: Migration and the Chinese; Anglo-Chinese Encounters since 1800: War, Trade, Science and Governance; Diasporic Chinese Ventures. Edited by Gregor Benton and Liu Hong; Divided China: Preparing for Reunification, 883-947.

Drew fixedMr. Drew Thompson, the Director of China Studies and Starr Senior Fellow at The Nixon Center in Washington, D.C., will present “China-North Korea Relations.”  Prior to joining The Nixon Center, Thompson was the National Director of the China-MSD HIV/AIDS Partnership in Beijing, a 5 year, $30 million HIV/AIDS program established by Merck & Co. He received his M.A. in Government, with a concentration in Homeland Security, from Johns Hopkins University. He has authored articles on Sino-US relations, international security and public health in Foreign Policy, China Security, The China Business Review, The International Herald Tribune, The Financial Times, China: An International Journal, The South China Morning Post and is a regular contributor to China Brief.
